Digital Content Protection, LLC (a subsidiary of Intel) is providing High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for HDMI. CE manufacturers may begin designing products incorporating the HDMI standard-addressing consumer demand for HD programming and for DTVs that display this content. How can I get the HDMI 1.0 Specification? Parties interested in obtaining the HDMI 1.0 Specification are required to first download and sign the HDMI Adopter Agreement or Test Equipment Maker Agreement (available at agreements) and remit payment of the annual fee. Once payment and two signed copies of the appropriate agreement have been received, HDMI Licensing, LLC will send a login name and password to the registered email address in order to download the 1.0 Spec. Can I review the HDMI Specification before deciding to pay for a license? The HDMI Specification is only available to those parties that have signed an Adopter Agreement and remitted their payment. However, the HDMI Founders have created an Informational Version of the Specification that interested parties can review to help them determine if they want to license the complete version of the Specification. When will prototypes of HDMI products be available? HDMI-based prototype devices were first demonstrated at CES in January 2003. The CE industry is currently transitioning from DVI to HDMI connections. Backward- compatible with the DVI 1.0 specification, HDMI enables both multi-channel digital audio and uncompressed video transmission over a single cable and connector, and in combination with HDCP addresses content providers' requirement for a secure interface to protect high-quality content from unauthorized redistribution. What's the difference between the Adopter Agreement and the Test Equipment Maker Agreement, and which one should I sign? Yes, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI using the CEA-861 profile for DTVs. HDMI DTVs will display video received from existing DVI-equipped products, and DVI-equipped TVs will display video from HDMI sources. Will current HD TVs and set-top boxes using DVI-HDTV be compatible with HDMI devices? Yes. Currently there are TVs with DVI-HDTV inputs available from a variety of manufacturers. Those devices will be compatible with future HDMI-equipped products. What types of video does HDMI support? HDMI has the capacity to support existing high-definition video formats (720p, 1080i, and even 1080p). It also has the flexibility to support enhanced definition formats such as 480p, as well as standard definition formats such as NTSC or PAL. What is the Compliance Test Specification? The Compliance Test Specification (CTS) was developed by the HDMI Founders to assist manufacturers in ensuring the compliance of their products with the HDMI Specification. It consists of numerous tests designed to check for compatibility of various HDMI-related aspects of a product, including audio, video, EDID, electrical signaling, protocols, etc. The HDMI Compliance Test Specification represents the minimum compliance testing required for HDMI products, and it is up to each manufacturer to fully test product functionality and interoperability. How can I get the Compliance Test Specification? The 1.0 version of the Compliance Test Specification is available to all parties that have licensed the HDMI 1.0 Specification. What is an Authorized Testing Center and how do I contact one? The HDMI Founders have established certain Authorized Testing Centers (ATC) where licensed manufacturers can bring products for compliance testing. HDMI technology has been designed to use standard copper cable construction at long lengths. In order to allow cable manufacturers to improve their products through the use of new technologies, HDMI specifies the required performance of a cable but does not specify a maximum cable length. Cable manufacturers are expected to sell reasonably priced copper cables at lengths of up to 15 meters. As semiconductor technology improves, even longer stretches can be reached with fiber optic cables, and with active cable technologies such as amplifiers or repeaters. When will HDMI cables be available? Due to the rapid adoption of HDMI among CE manufacturers and the demand we are seeing from end-customers, HDMI Licensing, LLC is in active discussions with cable manufacturers about supplying the retail channel with HDMI cables. Since the vast majority of the market requires 5m and shorter cables, we expect manufacturers to make these cables available first. We do expect some manufacturers to market 5-15m (and beyond) HDMI cables as the market dictates and on a more limited basis.
